Who dares ask... 7 Questions for Robert Mugabe

During your 27 years in power, thousands of people have been murdered by the State, from the Matabele genocide of the 1980s to police and army violence against the MDC. Do you feel personally responsible for any of these deaths?

When you took power in 1980, the Zimbabwe dollar was almost 1:1 against the British pound. It is now 60 000 on the official market and more than two million on the street. Did your policies contribute to this decline?

There is documented evidence of rape being used as a weapon against men and women who oppose your regime. What steps have you taken to stem this abuse?


A third of your people have fled to exile, either for political or economic reasons. What went wrong for so many to leave a country that you say is well governed?


Zimbabwe is the world’s fastest-shrinking economy with the world’s highest inflation. Would it require your exit for this to turn around or do you have plans to tackle the crisis?

You are a practising Christian and Roman Catholic. Does the murder and torture of your fellow citizens conflict with your religious beliefs?


There are calls for you to be tried on charges of crimes against humanity, possibly at The Hague. Is this a factor in your determination to remain as president?
